Bono to Join President Obama and Secretary Clinton at Global Food Security Summit
The global advocacy organization ONE is calling on world leaders to take bold, smart and targeted actions to fight hunger and malnutrition in developing countries. ONE, along with other leading organizations, are encouraging the G8 to deliver an ambitious and practical new global food security framework that aligns behind country-led investment plans and proven nutrition solutions to help lift 50 million people out of poverty and prevent stunting in 15 million children due to chronic malnutrition.
Leading up to the G8 Summit, Bono, the co-founder of ONE, will be attending the Chicago Council’s 3rd Annual Symposium on Global Agriculture and Food Security on May 18th. The high-level event will include remarks from President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and AU President Yayi Boni of Benin, among many other global leaders who will address G8 efforts on food security and the benefits of private sector investment in agriculture in Africa.

Teach, Learn, Grow with VSO
Written by Guest Blogger - Chantal Cooper
Einstein once said that ‘The only source of knowledge is experience’. We live our lives day by day, week by week learning from our daily encounters. We learn to talk, walk, run and as time passes by we grow within ourselves and our communities. Through our encounters with others, we may learn new things, learn new perspectives and gain access to new and wonderful opportunities. In a modern Western society, this may be the case. But what happens when there is no opportunity for personal growth? What happens when the simple process of learning and growing is hindered by the conditions you’ve been born into?

We learn to talk, walk, run and as time passes by we grow within ourselves and our communities. Through our encounters with others, we may learn new things, learn new perspectives and gain access to new and wonderful opportunities. In a modern Western society, this may be the case. But what happens when there is no opportunity for personal growth? What happens when the simple process of learning and growing is hindered by the conditions you’ve been born into?
In many countries, people are being held
back by their circumstances. They simply do not have access to the materials
they need to grow in themselves and the community. They do not have access to the education they
need to be able to develop a career and a voice. They do not have access to a
system in which that voice can be heard. And they do not have the strength to
be able to fight for anything more than their lives. In these countries, the
people remain seeds; unable to open and unable to grow.
But all life has the opportunity to grow
and at VSO, volunteers help to create the perfect conditions in which these people can not
only grow, but they can learn skills and knowledge that ensure that their
children and their children’s children too may grow. VSO sends volunteers abroad to not only help people deal with short term problems, but also to share
their experiences and knowledge in a way which helps provide long term
solutions. They send teachers to pass on
knowledge of skills required to gain access to jobs, healthcare professionals
to pass on knowledge of how to treat the sick and many other professionals to
ensure that there is access to a voice. As a result of this work abroad, their
volunteers ensure that people have access to the experiences and opportunities
needed to ensure a better standard of living whilst also gaining experience
themselves of the culture in which they are living.
To find out more about how you can share
your knowledge and experience whilst learning a different way of life, take a
look at VSO’s volunteering opportunities abroad.
Together, we can share our experiences and experience new ones to ensure that
the world has the knowledge to grow.
