International Women's Day 2012 - Empower Rural Women - End Hunger and Poverty

"Empower Rural Women – End Hunger and Poverty”

On average, women make up about 43 percent of the agricultural work force in developing countries, yet they lack the access to land, seeds, water, credit and market. Evidence indicates that if these women had the same access to productive resources as men, they could increase yields on their farms by 20 to 30 percent, raising total agricultural output in these countries by 2.5 to 4 percent. This would reduce the number of hungry people in the world by around 12 to 17 percent.

Some changes are already happening! Watch this short film that looks at the challenges and solutions for growing enough food in developing countries and the progress women are making in agriculture.

International Women's Day is March 8, 2012.
